چکیده

INTRODUCTION The diffusion tensor is always measured in the presence of background noise. Recent experimental observations by Jeong et al.[1] and Lazar et al.[2,3] have shown that the cones of uncertainty (COU) [4,5,6] of the major eigenvectors of the diffusion tensors in the brain are mostly elliptical. Analytical approaches have also been developed to characterize the elliptical cone of uncertainty [7] through nonlinear least squares estimations [8]. Here, we present a new technique to construct the COU based on the inverse of the Gnomonic projection and two normalized geometric measures associated with the COU—the normalized areal and circumferential measures.

Tract Orientation and Angular Dispersion Deviation Indicator (TOADDI): A framework for single-subject analysis in diffusion tensor imaging

The purpose of this work is to develop a framework for single-subject analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data. This framework is termed Tract Orientation and Angular Dispersion Deviation Indicator (TOADDI) because it is capable of testing whether an individual tract as represented by the major eigenvector of the diffusion tensor and its corresponding angular dispersion are significantly...

The Cone of Uncertainty Is Elliptical: Implications for DTI Tractography

INTRODUCTION The diffusion tensor is always measured in the presence of background noise. Within the framework of recently proposed methods of error propagation and of 1-order matrix perturbation for DTI [1,2], one can easily characterize the noise induced variability of the estimated tensor itself and of tensorderived quantities, scalar or vector. Of particular interest in tractography is the ...

Differentiation of Edematous, Tumoral and Normal Areas of Brain Using Diffusion Tensor and Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging

Background: Presurigical planning for glioma tumor resection and radiotherapy treatment require proper delineation of tumoral and peritumoral areas of brain. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is the most common mathematical model applied for diffusion weighted MRI data. Neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) is another mathematical model for DWI data modeling. Objective: We stud...

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery

Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

Evaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies

Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...
